Staff Gains Helpful Experience
Putting out the school paper involves more than meets the eye. Gathering the news, writing it, editing it, taking and processing the pictures, selecting the best materials available, making it fit all on the pages, writing headlines, and proofreading are some of the duties of about 75 people at Maine West.
Juniors in the English IIIJ classes do most of the writing for The Westerner as their English theme assignments. At the same time they are trying to accumulate 100 inches of printed copy so that they will be eligible to become members of Quill and Scroll Society, a national journalistic group.
A staff of about 25 students, headed by Editor John Gauger, takes the stories from the IIIJ classes and molds them into a size that will be suitable for the next issue of the paper. These people meet every day, the ninth period in Room A‑111
Enthusiasm is high at the beginning of the year after key staff members attend the Illinois State High School Journalism Association's annual convention held in September. This is a two‑day convocation at the University of Illinois. Staff members are guests of the school.
Each four‑page issue of the paper costs about $300. The paper is printed by off‑set method at the Des Plaines Printing Company.
As deadlines near, the pressure mounts. Staff members must learn to meet deadlines, work rapidly and accurately, and cooperate. After the paper is put to bed Wednesday on the week of publication, staff members make the trip to the print shop to paste up pages, direct page composition, and make final corrections.
