VOL. V, NO. 7
THE JV BASKETBALL team has perked up starting with a win over Forest View 47-31 on January 17th, followed by another at Glenbrook South 50-40, January 18th.
THE MAINE WEST SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL team dropped a game last Saturday, January 18th, as Forest View trounced them 28-16. The Freshman team, however, beat Forest View 26-22.
WITH IDENTICAL WINS of 35-11 over Forestview and Prospect, the JV matmen have run their seasonal record to 4 and 4. Leading the team are Bill Curres, Tom Klausing, and Keith Nygren.
THE SOPHOMORE MATMEN have a 1-5 record this year. Even though they have won only one match this year, they are steadily improving. Doing a fine job are freshmen 105-pounder Tom Curten, 120-pounder Wayne Rozanski, and 138-pounder Tom Hench.
WITH A 6 AND 2 RECORD the little Warriors rank high in the Mid‑Suburban League mat standings. Led by Russ Currer, Rusty Lino, and Ernie Fulbright, the little Warriors are on their way to the top.
THE FROSH‑SOPH SWIMMERS, under Coach Roy Kearns, are looking better than ever before, having beaten Oak Park 58-39, Morton West 60-34, Forestview 71-24, and Waukegan 52-42. Their season record is 5-4, and their conference record, 1-1. Against Waukegan, Norm Hudson and Ed Currier turned in records. Hudson had a time of :30.9 in the 50-yard backstroke, and Currier turned in a 1:32.8 in the 150-yard freestyle. First places were also taken by Newman, Anderson, Wenzel, Wandrey, and Popp. "The team is shaping up well, and they are going to be top conference contenders this year," cites Coach Kearns.
INTRAMURAL PARTICIPANTS have been playing basketball since December 13th. In the senior division, Don Witte's and Bob Poyer's squads are undefeated. Behind these two squads are Cal Lewis's and Bill Wagner's teams. Each of these squads have one loss a‑piece. Since this is a double elimination tourney, one more loss for either team could mean elimination from the tournament.
In the junior competition, six teams are left out of nine. Curtin and Skaritka have not been dented for a loss, while Stewart, Goelz, Hanselman, and Hopkins have but one loss each.
The sophomores are in full swing with their tourney too. There are seven teams remaining out of 11. These teams are Berger, Berkman, Gill, Johannes, Lucas, Olson, and Utecht.
Freshmen will get under way January 31st.
