Council Favors Referendum
Much talk has been heard lately about the tax referendum which will be voted upon by our parents on February 15th. Although much information has been distributed to inform the parents of the issue, it is a tragic but true fact that a substantial number of voters, who are often parents, fail to vote either because of an unawareness to the need of such an increase in educational funds, or simply because of apathy. I believe that we of the student body can alleviate both of these vote consuming factors by first knowing the issue at hand and then expressing some interest in it to our parents.
Your Student Council, in the interest of Maine West and you, has voted unanimously in favor of backing the tax referendum after lengthy investigation into its purposes and benefits. Here are some important facts which we feel you should know. The Education Fund of our school district pays teachers' salaries, and provides equipment and supplies needed for each of us in high school.
Right now, with the increased enrollments in the Maine schools and higher costs for salaries, equipment, and supplies, $63,000 will have to be borrowed from somewhere to pay teachers and buy the supplies needed for students this year - if the referendum is not passed February 15th.
Recently the school board was forced to take the Building Fund (which could be used to supply the funds for a spectator gym) and use it as an emergency measure to supplement the Educational Fund. This measure did not help our hopes for a spectator gym as you may readily see. It did not provide the necessary funds to operate the Maine schools, as the referendum could, but merely shifted the deficit from one fund to another.
On the average your parents will pay about 10 dollars more per year than they have been to the Educational Fund for the benefits of this tax referendum. Its passage will not only provide for a better Maine in general through better instructor facilities, but will also relieve the Building Fund which in turn will clear the way for what we believe to be some very promising future consideration about our spectator gym by the school board.
