VOL. V, NO. 8
THE VARSITY SWIMMERS have scored two more conference victories, one on January 24th against Glenbrook North and the other over Prospect last Friday night.
Saturday, the team traveled to Carl Sandburg High School to complete in the third annual Sandburg invitational relays. Five schools competed, among them being Riverside‑Brookfield, East Leyden, Joliet, and Sandburg. Maine West won the opening relay with the winning combination of Tom Gast, John Gunderson, Jim Hyerdall, and Jimo Kuhrt. This win brings Maine West its first swimming trophy. The team went on to defeat Joliet and East Leyden to take third place in the relays.
Glenbrook North fell to the tankers 54-41, in a meet which was not decided until the final event. Going into the 200-yard freestyle relay, the score stood Maine West 47, Glenbrook North 41. The relay was worth seven points, so the meet could have gone either way. The relay team of Berg, Gunderson, Hyerdall, and Schact, came through with a winning time of 1:36.8 to win the meet and tie the school record. Jim Hyerdall swam 50 yards in the relay with a time of 0:23.6, compared to the school record for 50-yard freestyle of 0:24.2.
THE JV, SOPHOMORE, AND FRESHMEN BASKETBALL squads have identical results in the last two weeks of competition.
All three squads were victorious over Glenbrook North, but were set back by Prospect. Scoring honors for the three squads went to Wolter, Moehling, and Fritz, respectively.
THE FROSH‑SOPH TRACKSTERS lost their opening meet to Schurz 67-33 on Wednesday, January 29th. The meet was held at Maine East's fieldhouse.
Phil Martin and Ron Harrigan led the team in scoring as they tallied five points each. Martin won the mile run and Harrigan placed second in the 50‑yard dash and was also on the winning 8‑lap relay team.
THE .JV AND SOPHOMORE MATMEN have had their share of trouble this past week as both squads dropped meets to Deerfield. The freshmen, however, took over a portion of first place by whipping Deerfield 27‑18.
MAINE WEST'S FROSH‑SOPH GYMNASTICS squad will try to extend its conference record to two wins‑no losses tomorrow afternoon against Forest View in B‑Wing gym at 2 p.m. The little gymnasts have won two of their last three matches, defeating Glenbrook North and East Leyden, and dropping a tough one to Waukegan.
THE FROSH‑SOPH tankers won one while losing one during last week's conference competition. Against Prospect, the tankers defeated Prospect 66-29, but were beaten by Glenbrook North 54-41. Their conference record now stands at 2-2.
