Trackmen Off To Fine Start
The varsity cindermen got off to a fine start by running past highly rated Schurz of Chicago 65-33 on Wednesday, January 29th. The meet was held at Maine East's fieldhouse.
Paul Neuman and Hank Blenner paced the Warriors with a first and a second in the broad jump. The thinclads added points as Neuman and Jerry Nebel took second and third in the 50‑yard dash. Lloyd Schlegel and Bob Biggs lengthened the lead by finishing first and second in the half mile. Rich Bokor and Pete Schafft showed West's strength in the 440‑yard dash by placing first and second. Russ Suszko lowered his best time as he took second place in the mile run with John Greco taking third. The hurdles saw Bob Tatge taking second in both highs and lows and Bruce Congalton placing third in the highs.
The ovalmen swept the high jump as Neuman, Bud Ziehn, and Greco grabbed the first three places. Larry Pintuck and Phil Boyce tied for first in the pole vault. Dale Luzinski and Tom Smith catpured second and third in the shot put. The 8‑lap relay team composed of Biggs, Bokor, Braun, and Schafft, rounded out the scoring by crossing the finish line before Schurz.
