West To Host PE Workshop
February 22
Teachers of the various Physical Education Departments in the area will hold a workshop on Saturday, February 22nd from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
At this workshop, there will be a demonstration of new teaching techniques, methods of presentation, and uses of equipment. Demonstrations will be given by teachers in this area and by visiting teachers from Finland, colleges, and the YMCA.
Miss Dawn Butler and Mr. Sidney Drain will put on a demonstration of junior and senior high gymnastics using students of Maine West. Coach Al Carstens will give demonstrations on football and baseball. There will also be demonstrations of skin and scuba diving, modern dance, health instruction, and teaching techniques for elementary school physical education.
"A New Image for Physical Education," will be the topic discussed by Dr. Arthur E. Steinhaus, dean of George Williams College of Chicago.
Physical Education teachers, Miss Kay Pierce and Miss Mae Jean Engen, are in charge of extra arrangements and exhibits on new equipment and books related to physical education respectively.
"Members of leader programs will act as participants, guides, and hostesses for the day. Anticipated attendance from the Northeastern District of Illinois is approximately 350 teachers.
