Chemical Industries' Council
Sponsors Science Seminar
What kind of salary could you expect if you chose chemistry or physics for a profession? This question and many others were answered for over 500 Maine West students last February 3rd at a science careers' seminar. It was given by a panel of seven outstanding scientists, sponsored by the Chemical Industry Council.
The panelists were Dr. Louis Mayron, bio‑chemist; Mr. L M. Davis, chemical engineer; Mr. M. L. Yeagle, physicist; Dr. L. E. Ousterhout, bio‑chemist; and Mr. P. E. Holder, coordinator of the day's program.
The panel stressed their educational background and explained the many different fields in which they are now working. They discussed the benefits as well as the problems that await the future scientist. One of the many rewards that are in store for a person who decides upon a career in science is travel. Dr. Ousterbout stated that chemists from his own company and many others were working in Africa, South America, and even Asia. He also revealed that a person with a Ph.D. in chemistry, who enters industry, can expect to earn a beginning salary of between $7,500 and $8,300.
Mr. Loren Miller, Science Department chairman, stated, "The meeting was very rewarding; the contributions of the visiting speakers brought new and purposeful meaning to the students who are contemplating a career in science."
