Trackmen Travel to Evanston
After Posting A 2-1 Record
West's varsity track squad split its last two performances as they trounced Taft of Chicago on Thursday, February 6th, by a 63-37 score. On Thursday, February 13th, the tracksters lost their first meet of the season by a 56-44 score to Morton West. The next meet is tonight when the team travels to Evanston.
In the Morton West meet, the ovalmen couldn't get started as they were shut out in the broad jump, and could only manage a second by Bob Tatge and third by Wayne Wysoglad in the high and low hurdles. They fell still farther behind in the 50‑yard dash as Jerry Nebel took third place despite a fine time.
Westmen Edge Closer
Things started looking better as Bob Biggs and Lloyd Schlegel finished first and third, respectively, in the half‑mile. The Westmen edged closer to Morton as the 4‑lap relay team of Bernie Braun, Nebel, Parl Neuman, and Tatge won. In the quarter-mile, Pete Schafft and Chipp Krainik placed second and third, respectively.
The shot put gave Maine a temporary lead as Dale Luzinski and Tom Smith finished first and second. The thinclads came within four points of Morton when Russ Suszko and John Greco placed first and second in the mile run.
The tracksters fell behind again, though, as Neuman finished second in the high jump, and the meet ended as the 8‑lap relay team of Biggs, Braun, Schafft, and Schlegel lost by an eyelash.
