VOL. V, NO. 9
"Maine's coaches are the greatest, especially Coach Dick Carlini. He is the best wrestling coach in state," reported Erv Geisler, this week's Warrior of the West.
Erv, who is 5 feet 9 inches tall and has curly red hair, wrestles in the 138‑pound class. He has earned three varsity letters and his sophomore letter. He was chosen as captain of the team last year and has a varsity letter in football.
Defeating his man from Maine East in this year's district wrestling meet and being made champion of his weight division are some of Erv's outstanding thrills.
When asked what he has learned by participation, he replied, "I have learned to come back after losing hard fought matches. Losing is a part of winning and makes a win standout more."
"This year's school spirit has been the best that I've seen at Maine West. The number of spectators out to watch wrestling meets have been greater than ever before, and I hope it will continue to grow in the following years at Maine."
The funniest thing that ever happened to Erv was when he defeated his man at Oak Park and Coach Carlini turned his back thinking that Erv had lost. The next day Coach Carlini bawled him out and wanted him to wash the mats. "The hardest part of training is going without food and lasting through one of Coach Carlini's practices."
Tonight Erv wrestles in his first set of matches for the Sectional championship at Arlington High School.
