Dick Enrolled at Stedelijk
Dick Heller '65, Maine West's first AFS representative, is well situated in his new school and home in Arnhem, Netherlands.

He is attending Stedelijk Gymnasium in Arnhem, which is an all-boys school. Dick said it was rather small compared to Maine West.

Students are told what courses to take. Dick will be taking Latin, French, German, Dutch, English, and possibly Greek. His other subjects will be earth science, geography, chemistry, history, and some math. Apparently Dick is being kept very busy because he hasn't written to his mother since school started. Dick has written that he thinks he has begun to master the Dutch language. He had three years of German at Maine West.

Host Family

The de Langen family is Dick's host family while he is in Arnhem. Of the five children in the family, only Reis, who is the same age as Dick, is at home.
With only one week's notice, Dick left the U.S. on June 26th. He flew to New York and then boarded the Seven Seas, an AFS vessel bound for Europe.

After arrival, Dick and his new brother spent some time at a language camp in the northern Netherlands. Dick spent seven hours a day in language study. Time for recreation was also found as they sailed and swam.

To Graduate in '65

Dick will be able to get his diploma at Maine West but will not he present for graduation exercises since his school will not be over until July 14th. Needing only two and a half credits to graduate, Dick would like to enter the field of medicine when he goes to college.

Dick's sisters, Janet '66, and Peggy '68, are enrolled at Maine West. He has a younger sister Beth in sixth grade, and an older brother William '61, who is now in the navy.

Dick's address is Izaak Evertslaan 1, Arnhem, Netherlands.
