Seniors Set Record In NMSQT Scholars
This year 12 seniors from Maine West are eligible to win National Merit Scholarships.

They are Mike Amling, John Bentley, Daniel Colvin, Brian Dole, Barbara Gundelach, Richard Leyerle, Paul Norris, Ronald Pazora, Robert Reinhart, and Albert Repperger. Besides these semi-finalists, 29 seniors were honored with commendations of excellence.

The qualifying score was 146 points. This year the high scorer from Maine West was Mike Amling, who achieved 158 points.

Last March, 47 per cent of the Junior Class took the scholarship test; a total of 367 students established a new record for our school. The year before that, when only one student attained semi-finalist status, the percentage of juniors who took the test was considerably less.

To Be Tested Again

Another test will be given this year which will even more limit the number of students across the country still eligible for a scholarship. The final decision will not be made on additional test scores alone, but also on high school grades, citizenship and leadership qualities, extracurricular activities, and creative accomplishments.
Winners may receive as much as $6,000 for four years of undergraduate work at the college of their choice, or an honorary award of $400 for the four years, depending on the individual need. Even if the semi-finalist is not selected for a scholarship, his name will be sent to accredited colleges and universities in the region around his high school and to various scholarship associations to increase his opportunity to secure financial assistance.

Four-year Scholarships

Over 17,000 schools participated in the tests this year, and about 14,000 students received the opportunity to obtain a fouryear scholarship.

Of the students who have reached the second phase of the competition, John M. Stalnaker, president of NMS Corporation said, 'Semi-finalists are representative of our country's most intellectually able young people.

"They possess the talents and qualities necessary for leadership in the future. They are resourceful, hard-working, and ambitious."
