| Maine concert band places Fourth in national contest | ||||||||||
| Hard work, practice, and skill again paid off for the Maine West Band when last July 25th they placed fourth in the Wisconsin Spectacle of Music, National Championship Contest. At 6 am. that morning, the band boarded two chartered buses and headed for South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where the competition took place. Winning the state championship last year made the band eligible to compete for the title National Champions. Twenty-five bands competed for first place. The contest consisted of three parts: inspection, concert competition, and a four hour parade consisting of 150 units. For the concert the band played "Symphonic Overture" and "Americans We." |
Fight for the top was close. When the points were totaled, the Racine Elks Band of Wisconsin placed first with 89 points. Maine West totaled 83 points and placed fourth in the nation. The judges commented on the fine musicianship and appearance of the Maine West musicians. Even though the tension of the day kept members busy, they found time to relax by swimming in a lake near Milwaukee. Also, they watched the Evening Spectacular, consisting of marching bands and bugle corps. During the course of the summer, the band members remained active. They took part in summer park concerts, the fourth of July parade and topped the season off by attending this national championship and competing with other experienced bands in the nation. |
