| Carla Fasting joins in West classes and activities | ||||||||||
| Maine West is very lucky to have Carla Fasting as foreign exchange student this year. She's living with Mr. and Mrs. Strom; Jan '85; Karen, a sophomore at Kalamazoo college; and twin brothers who are in junior high. Carla comes from a suburb of the governmental residence called The Hague, which is similar to a small suburb of Chicago. Carla went to school in Holland where she took about 16 subjects including French, German, English, and her native language, Dutch. Her school day was from 8:30 until 2:15 with a 15 minute break for lunch. This, and having only six periods a day, may really sound nice to Mainites, but Carla had school six days a week! Having no homeroom or study halls in her country, Carla finds them very helpful and useful. Carla's Favorites In the Netherlands, where they have many lakes, the favorite sports are swimming and sailing. Carla plays tennis and field hockey. She likes reading very much and especially enjoys works of Slauerhoff, a Dutch writer, and Thomas Mann, who is German. When going on a vacation in the Netherlands, one has only to drive a few hours to be in another country. There the Dutch vacation from country to country as Americans travel from state to state. Carla has traveled in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, and Belgium. |
About the Beatles When asked about the Beatles, Carla said she liked some of their records, but not others. She went on to say that while the Beatles were in Amsterdam, sailing down a canal, girls were jumping in the water trying to get near them. A favorite Dutch slang expression is "meesterlyk" which means "cool" or "neat." Three Week Tour Carla left Rotterdam Aug. 1st, sailing for 10 days on the ship, The Seven Seas. She will leave Des Plaines in June to take a three-week tour of the East coast and to visit the World's Fair. Carla would like Americans to realize that people don't wear wooden shoes in her country. The food there is very similar to American food, except that the Netherlands have no corn. Carla's favorite food is pizza, which she first enjoyed here. Carla says about her new life, "I am very lucky that the Strom family will be my family for this year. It's a real 'meesterlyk' family, and I am already feeling right at home." |
