Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

In the Feb. 5th edition of The Westerner, you ran the editorial, "Did the Proclamation Free All the Negroes?"

In this article, you asked what Lincoln would think of the present position of the Negro in our society if he could come back today.

You then implied that he would be greatly shocked at the Negro's present situation.
I disagree with this implication. Historians have claimed that when Lincoln declared the Emancipation Proclamation, his sole purpose was to eliminate slavery. This did not include actually making the Negro equal to the White.

If you look into this matter further, you will probably find that this is the over-whelming opinion of most notable historians.

Yours truly,
A "History" student
