Maine West Holds Regional Basketball Tournament |
||||||||||
| With only two Conference tilts left, the Warriors have assured themselves of an undisputed first-place finish in this year's MSC standings. The Warriors are now shooting for an unblemished Conference record this year, so they can't afford to slack off especially at Forest View tonight. In the last meeting between these two teams, the Warriors had to come from behind in the fourth quarter to win. The Falcons held a 45-41 lead over the Westmen at the end of three quarters but ran into foul trouble and suffered a 64-48 defeat. The Warriors will place their 22-game Conference whining streak on the line in tonight's contest. Whomp Wheeling Wheeling proved an easy victim for the Warriors last Saturday, falling 52-24. The Wildcats could muster only nine points by the half, compared to West's 29. Jim Smith led all scorers with 20 points. Tom Hendrickson hit for seven points, while Stoney Jackson and Ted Wolters chipped in with six points apiece. |
Glenbrook North's Spartans invaded the Warrior den last Friday. Although both teams played a poor first half, the Warriors built up a 20-11 halftime margin. Stoney Jackson's 20 points carried Maine through the rest of the game. The final score was Maine West 47, Glenbrook North 41. The Prospect Knights gave the Warriors the year's toughest Conference game two weeks ago. Although the Warriors held an 8-7 lead after the first quarter, the Knights battled back to an 18-15 advantage at the half and led 25-23 after the third quarter. The lead changed hands three times in the fourth quarter before Jim Smith stepped to the line with 13 seconds left. Smith sank two free throws to put Maine into the lead, 34-33. Prospect brought the ball in, desperately trying for the winning basket or a game-tying free throw. Phillips, the Knights' big gun, set for a final shot; but Stoney Jackson blocked it. Seconds later the final buzzer sounded. |
