Rob and Dawn To Appear
on TV

Tall, bespectacled, scholarly appearing Rob Reinhart was flashing a big smile Tuesday morning. The reason-the debate team, of which he is a member, won its first round in the TV Rebuttal series at the WBBM studios the night before. It was a memorable occasion for this senior personality who was appearing on Rebuttal for the second year representing Maine West.

The program was taped Monday of this week to be shown at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 20th. Desired to Debate

"Surprisingly enough, I came to high school with a desire to get on the debate squad," commented Rob. "I can't actually say why I became a member, except that I enjoy this sort of activity very much. I readily encourage anyone with a similar interest to join in this satisfying experience."

Rob remarked that debating can bring discouragement, but anyone with a sincere desire to participate and who enjoys intelligent discussion can become a good debater.

Naturally, Rob's innermost desire is to become a lawyer after college. He plans to major in political science at either Northwestern or Harvard.

"My most thrilling experience was winning first place in extempore speaking in the District speech contest recently," he reminisced.

When asked about one of his interesting experiences in debating, he came up with this anecdote. "At one tournament held at Prospect, my partner, Phil Engle, and I received a close decision in a debate with Morton East. One of the fellows from Morton, a little disturbed about the outcome, left the room and disgustedly slammed his briefcase down on a window ledge in the hail. The briefcase slipped out of his hand, through the window, and down two stories to the ground."

Rob's hobbies include playing the piano, building tree houses out of toothpicks, and collecting rare species of Peruvian porpoises. He is looking forward to the tennis season which is about to get under way. In his junior year he lettered.

Aside from being president of the debate team and a member of the National Forensic League, he is on the Legend staff, a member of National Honor Society, Quill and Scroll, Historical Society, Sigma Chi Sigma, and M-Club. Rob is also a National Merit finalist and an Illinois State Scholarship semifinalist. This is quite an impressive list of achievements of which Rob can well be proud.
"By all means, if you're willing to work and have the time, join the Debate team. It will undoubtedly be the most rewarding experience you'll ever have," advises bouncy senior Dawn Piotter. Dawn, one of Maine's best debaters, joined the team in her sophomore year because she thought it would be educational and a great opportunity to meet interesting people.

Enjoyed Ginger

Last summer she attended a five-week institute in speech at Northwestern University on a scholarship, and, while living on campus, she met debaters from all over the country. This and playing one of the lead roles in the Senior Class play, Time Out For Ginger, were her most thrilling experiences. "During my (Ginger's) argument in the play with the high school principal, the rope holding up my jeans fell off," reminisces Dawn.

She is active in Thespian Society, Concert Orchestra, Tri-M, and Historical Society. She has been in V-Show and on the Honor Roll consistently. Most of her life revolves around debate and public speaking.

Stands Small

On March 20th Dawn will appear on Rebuttal with Rob Reinhart '65, Joy Heckenbach '66, and Doug Bergman '67, on the taped television debate against Marion Central high school. It is doubtful that she will ever forget her appearance on the program last year. Before the program began, the moderator asked her to stand up and she answered, "I am standing!" (Dawn is a very petite, 5 foot 1 inch girl.) This year Dawn is looking forward to her appearance with higher hopes!

When she is not busy preparing for debates or upcoming speeches, Dawn is either playing the piano or writing English themes late Sunday nights which are due the next morning. After graduation she plans to major in Speech at Augustana College.
