Warriors Vie for Regional Crown Tonight |
||||||||||
| Displaying championship form, the varsity cagers crushed Forest View 61-35 to earn the right to play for the Regional championship tonight. The Warrior strategy changed significantly with the majority of the scoring coming from Ted Wolter and Bill Verber, rather then Jim Smith. Verber led all scorers with 17 points, Wolters had 15, and Smith had 11. Maine West defeated Palatine Conant 55-34 in the first round of the Maine West Regional on March 1st. Stoney Jackson's 10 points led West to a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Conant held the Warriors to three points. The Cougars' solid 2-3 zone defense held Jim Smith to a minimum of scoring. Conant scored 12 points, seven by center Larry Powell, to take a 20-16 half-time lead. In the third quarter the score swayed back and forth. With two seconds left, Jackson scored to give the Warriors a 29-28 lead. Tom Hendrickson and Smith tallied six |
points apiece for the Warriors in the fourth quarter. After the last of Conant's three field goals, the Warriors scored 14 straight points to give them their final lead of 55-34. Even if the Warriors fail to win the regionals this week, the season won't be a total loss. The Warriors closed their season's schedule with an unblemished 14-0 Conference record and hold the distinction of never having lost an MSL game. Last Friday the Warriors crushed Niles North in an away game. Maine, as was expected, dominated every phase of the game to an easy 87-50 victory. The really important game for the Warriors was played at Forest View on Feb. 19th. Maine entered this one with a 12-0 Conference record. Forest View, playing before a home crowd, wanted victory badly. However, the Falcons' hopes were in vain as the Warriors went on to pull a close 49-43 victory. |
