Seniors Achieve Recognition

Ten Maine West students have been named finalists in the 1964-65 National Merit Scholarship Competition. They are Michael Amling, John Bentley, Daniel Colvin, Brian Dole, Barbara Gundelach, Richard Leyerle, Paul Norris, Ronald Pazdra, Robert Reinhart, and Albert Ripperger.

Last fall these same ten students were named semifinalists in the competition and went on to compete in the finals. This is the greatest percentage of students in the history of Maine who have made the finals. Every year about 98 per cent of the semifinalists become finalists.
In the final phase of the competition, the NMSC board will consider the students' high school grades, creative accomplishment, leadership qualities, extra-curricular activities, and school citizenship along with their scores on the test.

These students will now be eligible for awards reaching a maximum of $6,000 a year for four years of college. This stipend is tailored according to the recipient's need. The winners will be announced about April 28th, 1965. NMSC sponsors the awards and about 250 business corporations, foundations, colleges, unions, trusts, professional associations, and individuals provide the funds.
