New Combo Comes to Maine

"Play a cha-cha! Play a cha-cha!" Sounds like a cheer, doesn't it? It was actually just a yell from a crowd requesting a song from the Cor-Vettes, one of Maine West's newest combos. "But we don't know a cha-cha!" was the reply at this most embarrassing moment. However, the group was able to improvise, and they played six successful cha-chas in a row.

The Cor-Vettes have been together three months and consist of Bill Just '65, drums; John Gable '65, rythm; Barre Probst '67, lead; Doug Rossberg '65, sax; Vern Ray '66, rhythm, and Bill Meador '65, bass. They play for all occasions, including private parties and open houses.

Open houses, nonetheless, are their pet peeves. People come up and ask to try their instruments, or they sing along with the music and crowd around the group so tightly that the combo can hardly sing, much less play.
The Cor-Vettes rehearse at each other's houses whenever they can get together, but getting together is difficult. They have part-time jobs and homework. Besides this, Barre leads another group called the Dimensions.

Most of their music centers around popular tunes. As Barre says, their music is "rock 'n roll." However, the boys can play almost any type of music that is requested. The group's favorite professional singers include the Dave Clark Five, Johnny Rivers, and Trini Lopez.

The combo's most frustrating moment was the time the mike went off. Two boys from the group had to travel to Chicago to get another while the others entertained the audience alone.

"Because of the competition, combos really have to know how to play to get an engagement," commented the boys.
