Maine West's Baseball Champs Face Tough Teams: Carstens |
||||||||||
| "We face the toughest pitchers in the Mid Suburban League every time we take the field." This statement by coach Al Carstens exemplifies the respect teams around the league hold for the varsity diamondmen. Having never lost a Mid Suburban League pennant, the Mainites are on top of everybody's "beat" list. The pitching around the league this year should prove to be as good as any in the area. Tom Lungren of Forest View, who threw a no-hitter at the Warriors last year, will again be on the mound for the Falcons. Glenbrook South, boast-ing their first senior class, will be a threat; and Deerfield, which is just coming into its own as a MSL athletic power, will also be a contender. "I see it to be a tight four-team race," related coach Carstens. How do the Warriors stack up this year? With seven returning lettermen the outlook is far from dreary. However, as Coach Carstens said, |
"We have unproven personnel at third base, and first base is wide open. We also have six boys all going hard to nail down outfield positions under Coach Gaston Freeman." What will it take for the Westmen to repeat? Mr. Carstens believes two good pitchers, besides Stoney Jackson, and another fine year from the senior right-hander. Predictions usually hurt a team more than they help it. Being a wise coach, all Mr. Carstens would say is, "We'll play the games one by one and see what develops. But remember, we are the Conference champions." All factors considered, Maine should once again hold its own in the Conference this year. The Mainites play their first home game on Friday, April 9th, after clashes with Oak Park, Evanston, and Morton West. |
