| With baseball in the air, The Westerner turns to two top-flight diamondmen Bill Verber and Mike Neese. "Verbie," who is 5 feet, 11 inches tall, weighs 145 pounds, and has blue eyes, has already earned three varsity letters and hopes to earn his fourth in baseball this spring. Bill was a first string guard on the basketball team and is usually a starting outfielder for the diamondmen. Commenting on his greatest thrill in sports, he related, "Beating LaGrange in the Proviso Holiday Tournament and being on Conference champion basketball and baseball teams were both very exciting" Bill's hobbies are sports and a certain senior girl! He thinks MW is great, but his pet peeve is that "school spirit was terrible all year until the Regionals." After graduation Bill plans to attend Western Illinois University, majoring in business administration. |
Mike is 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs 155, and has brown hair and blue eyes. He plays shortstop on the baseball team. "My biggest thrill in baseball was the time I got a triple in the 1963 tournament. Being a member of the state champion team was an experience I'll never forget." Mike has learned from participating in sports that "athletics is life on a small scale. You have to learn how to win and lose. The idea is never to give up no matter how far behind you may be." When asked what advice he would give to any boy going out for this sport, Mike replied, "I would tell this person to develop his abilities as best he could, but hustle and determination always makes up what is lacking in ability." He gets disgusted with people who always complain. This type of person can always seem to find fault in the best of things. Mike has been looking around for a scholarship, but nothing definite has come up yet. "The hardest part about training is Coach Carstens' drills, especially the hot-box drill," declared Mike. Mike is looking forward to college and the fact that he will have more responsibility when he is on his own. |
