||||||||||
| Mike Amling '65, took first place in the 1965 state mathematics competition! Our mathematics team took second! The members of the team are Mike, Ron Pazdra, and Paul Norris, and their respective scores were 107.75, 77.25, and 60.50. "This is the first time Maine West has scored this high, or taken any individual first place," commented Mr. Dan Farris. "Our team has improved from 11th to second since last year." Mike will receive a silver medal for being Maine's top scorer for three consecutive years. Mike placed ninth last year and fifth in his sophomore year. |
Mike's first interest and aptitude in mathematics was noticed when his grandfather taught Mike to count at the age of 23 months. He became interested in algebra in third grade. Last summer Mike attended IIT (Illinois Institute of Technology) with some other students where he participated in an NSF (National Science Foundation) sponsored program on number theory and computer programming (IBM 120). Mike's intentions are to attend Valparaiso University and major in mathematics with an emphasis on computers |
