Weather Holds Diamondmen Back; MW Still Ranks High |
||||||||||
| "As of now we're playing good ball," commented the coach of the varsity baseball team Mr. Al Carsten, "but there must be some improvements." Perhaps the toughest game was played yesterday against Forest View High School. This was a conference game in which Maine had to face Forest View's no-hit pitcher Tom Lungren. If MW won this game it will have a better chance of going downstate. More about this game will appear in the next issue. Maine West now leads the Conference standings with a 4 win, 0 loss record. Glenbrook North ranks a close second with 4 wins and 1 tied game. Wednesday, April 21st, Maine West was host to the Deerfield Warriors. Jim Smith pitched Maine's 9 to 1 victory over Deerfield. Smith, with 3 wins and 0 losses, gave up only 3 hits, while MW was able to hit 10. The Maine West diamondmen downed Wheeling 6 to 4 on Monday, April 12. Sherman Schuett, Maine West's pitcher, gave up 7 hits to Wheeling. Schuett has two wins and no losses. |
The Maine West varsity team has lost only two games out of their past six. Oak Park and Evanston high schools downed the Warriors 5 to 3 and 2 to 1. "The weather has been hold-ing everybody back," mentioned Coach Carsten. So far two games have been postponed because of the weather or damp ground. "This is the worst spring I've seen in my history as a baseball coach," added the coach. Frosh - Soph The sophomore diamondmen have been making a good showing this spring, having lost only one game to Niles North by a score of 2 to 1. The victories for the sophomores have been against Oak Park 9 to 5; Glenbrook South 1 to 0; Deefield 8 to 0, and Wheeling 14 to 2. The freshmen have won five of their games, lost one, and have not completed a game against Evanston. |
