East Relay Tonight

Tonight the varsity trackmen compete in the Maine East Relays at East starting at 6 p.m. Some of the top performers will be national record holder Larry Kelly and Doug Macember of Maine South, and Rich Biokor, John Greco, and Lloyd Schiegel of Maine West.

The Maine West cindermen placed 4th out of 16 teams' at the Waukegan Relays. The distance medley relay team (Bokor. Jerry Nebel, Bernie Braun, and Schlegel), and the 880-yard relay team (Braun, Nebel, Kan, Mandelky and Bokor) added two new trophies to West as they both took firsts.

Roy Houston of Evanston was awarded the Steve Drew trophy as he was voted the top athlete of the meet by the coaches. Maine's Rich Bokor was voted the second best athlete of the meet.

Two seconds were taken for the Westmen by the 2-mile relay team (Kevin Flurkey Ed Lusk, Phil Martin, and Schiegel) and the middle distance relay team of (Braun, Barry Johnson, Bob Rosedale and Bokor).

Tom Smith placed 5th in the discus and Martin placed 5th in the mile run. John Greco, one of the Warriors' star
runners, pulled a muscle in a triangular meet and was not able to compete in the Waukegan relays.

In a triangular meet with Prospect and Glenbrook South, West's varsity runners had 69 points to Prospect's 40 and Glenbrook's 39. Prospect is the de fending Conference champs and are contenders for the crown again.

The thinclads had four boys to run State qualifying times. They were John Greco in the 880-yard run with a time of 2:00, taking first; Russ Suszko, as he put on a tremendous kick in the last 300 yards of the mile to finish first with a time of 4:35; Rich Bokor and Lloyd Schlegel both ran State qualifying times in the 440-yard dash. Bokor finished second with a time of 50.8 seconds, which is also a new school record. This was the first time in two weeks that Bokor competed in a meet as he was out with a pulled muscle. Schiegel finished third with a time of 51.5 seconds,

Jerry Nebel and Bernie Braun placed second and third in the 220-yard dash, respectively. Nebel and Braun also took first and second, respectively, in the broad jump. The 880-yard relay team (Rosedale, Nebel, Vern Ray and Braun) finished first over GBS.
