| With baseball season in progress, The Westerner looks to two top players, Dan Carison and Dan Makos. Dan Carlson tips the scale at 165 pounds, stands 5 feet 6 3/4 inches high, and has blue eyes and brown hair. He advises boys not to go out for any sport unless they are really interested in it. Of course, baseball is his favorite sport. From his experiences in baseball he has learned that it takes a lot of desire to win. "You've got to say to yourself that you're better than the other guy." Dan has lettered once in football and baseball, and he hopes to win another letter this year in baseball. He has participated four years in each sport, and he was chosen as the most valuable player in baseball his sophomore year. His athletic abilities have won him a scholarship to Ohio State University. When asked what could be done about school spirit, Dan replied, "Last year school spirit wasn't good until the regionals, then it improved. Now students seem more interested." Dan's pet peeve Is "kids that knock the school, because we have one of the best schools around." He is looking forward to attending college and acquiring a good education. |
"If students are notified earlier and there is more publicity for particular sports, then school spirit would probably be better," states Dan Makos. Danny stands 5 feet 6, weighs 145 pounds, and has brown hair and eyes. The most outstanding game of his baseball career was when the MW team took the regional at Rockford. Dan has learned that "desire and hustle is what it takes to get ahead." When asked what advice he would give to boys entering this sport, Danny replied, "Always put out 100 per cent of your ability." Dan has lettered once in basketball and baseball. During his freshman and sophomore years, he was elected captain of the baseball team. Kenny Hubbs, Dan's favorite athlete, was a second baseman for the Cubs until he died in a plane crash. This year Dan is still waiting for a hit in the head. That is, each year he has gotten hit in the head during the baseball season. This year he is lucky, so far! Dan is looking forward to security and a job. After graduation he will attend Wallon Business School. Continuation from April 2nd issue of the Westerner. . .Jim Richards stands 5 feet 71/2 inches tall, has brown hair, brown eyes, and weighs 140 pounds. He has lettered once in both crosscountry and tennis. His outstanding tennis match clinched second place in the conference for the Varsity tennis team. By way of brownie points, Jim adds, "We'll have many future conference championships as a result of Mr. King our tennis coach." His advice to would-be athletes is "don't quit." Jim ranks his cousin Bob Richards as an outstanding athlete. Illinois University at Urbana campus is included in Jim's plans. Aside from studying dentistry, he plans on participating in college sports and working his way through school. |
