MW Foiled by Fenton;
Drops District

It's a sad day at Maine West. The Warrior baseball team, one of the strongest teams in the Chicago area, was edged out of the State tournament by Fenton, 4-3. Although the Mainites tallied 10 hits to Fenton's nine, they were unable to take advantage of scoring opportunities. The losing pitcher was starter Sherm Schuett. Stoney Jackson came in as relief for Maine in the fifth inning.

Tuesday night the Warriors won the right to play Fenton by shutting out Forest View 2-0. However, the Mainites were held hitless by the Falcons' ace hurler Tom Lundgren.

Maine scored both runs in the third inning. Danny Makos, Warrior second baseman, led off the inning with a walk. Bill Verber moved Makos to second with a sacrifice bunt. After Jerry Hanselmann grounded out (pitcher to first,) Mike Neese sent a towering flyball to left field for what would
normally have been the third out. As fate would have it, the left fielder let the ball slip through his fingers and Makos scored. Neese was driven in by Stormy Jackson's bloop single, and Dan Carison grounded to third to end the inning.

Jim Smith, on the mound for Maine, was never really in trouble. He struck out 15 Falcons in seven innings and scat-tered five hits in an excellent pitching performance.

In their latest Conference outing the diamondmen whipped Deerfield 11-0. Maine had a field day at the plate racking up 12 hits, and Smith pitched fine four-hit shutout.

The sixth and seventh innings were the clinchers for the Warriors when they scored five and four runs, respectively.
