| By Kent Lashway It has been almost a month now, and yet now - only now is the world ready for what it is about to hear. Few know that on April 20th the pride of Maine West - the faculty volleyball team - fell to the hands of Mr. Kearns' 8th period Intramural champions. After streaking to ten previous victories, "Kearns' Commandos" undoubtedly hand the psychological edge over the veterans going into the contest. As they went into the final points of the first match, it had already been made clear to the losing opponents that the end was near. However, after the first match victory over the faculty, the intramural champs decided to give the oldsters a change to regain their ego, and as a gesture of pure courtesy, they dropped the second round game 15-6. But the inevitable had to occur at some time or another, so the 8th period champs went on to take final round, 15-12. The members of the winning team included Tom Conway, Dave Goodrich, Wally Clotier, John Romano, Jim Nerius, Dick Stover, Frank Tantone, John Kennett, Marty Dettmer and Captain Mark Sorenson. By far the standout player for the faculty was "Spike" Mueller. Mr. Mueller was backed up by Mr. Blake, Mr. Drain, Mr. Suffield, Mr. Hommerding, and Mr. Magsamen. |
For a team which wasn't sure of winning Conference, the Maine West track squad has come a long way. They reached their peak last Saturday at Arlington where they thoroughly dominated the field at the State District meet. The Warriors' total of 54 points was challenged by no one, as their closet opponent, Palatine, tallied only 32 points. All in all, the Westmen qualified 12 men for this weekend's State semifinals, (by bettering the state qualifying time or placing first or second). This is more than any other team in the state, with the exception of the favorite, Evanston, who qualified 17. The Warriors may have qualified the second most individuals, but this, unfortunately, does not mean they will place second in the State meet. Three other upstate teams, Proviso West, Bloom, and Morton West, will all be challenging Maine for the top positions, and other downstate powers may push the Westmen farther down in the final standings. The fact remains, however, that 12 men will be making the trip, and their efforts should be enough to finish somewhere near the top. |
