Track Team State Bound

Today and tomorrow the Warrior trackmen will see how they stand against the best in the State Track and Field finals at Champaign Urbana.

Last Saturday the Warriors under head coach Joe Jobst won the Arlington district over 25 other schools; the trackmen qualified men in every event but the shot put and the high jump.

The meet started off nicely with Wayne Wysoglad gliding over the high hurdles to finish first. Jerry Nebel then took second in the 100 yard dash, beating out the favorite George Morris of Prospect.

The strongpoint for the Gindermen was the 880-yard run; Lloyd Schlegel won with a time of 1:56.2, one of the best times in the area. Junior Kevin Flurkey followed closely; his time was 1:57.2. A school record was set by the victorious 880 yard relay team of Nebel, Vern Ray, Bernie Braun and Rich Bokor. The time of the quartet was 1:30.8, one of the best times in the State.

With only a little rest Rich Bokor came on strong to finish third in the 440-yard dash, and in the process he broke his own school record. Bokor's time was 50.5 seconds.

Wysoglad placed second in the low hurdles, and both John Greco and Russ Suszko qualified for State in the mile run. Greco and Suszko both have been bothered by pulled muscles.

In the 220-yard dash, Nebel and Braun finished first and second, respectively. Maine's mile relay team of Flurkey, Jim Braun, Bokor, and Schlegel finished third.
Warrior Tom Smith set a new school record in the discus with a toss of 165 feet 4 inches to come in first.

Phil Boyce became the first pole vaulter from Maine West to go down-state as he vaulted 12 feet 8 inches for a fourth place and a new school record, and Braun took second in the broad jump.

All of these boys will be competing for Maine West in today's State Finals. Jim Burson placed fifth in the broad jump but did not qualify for State.

The varsity tracksters beat Glenbrook North in a dual meet 69-49. Taking firsts for West were Nebel in the 100 and 220-yard dashes, Phil Martin in the mile, Ken Bixby in the shot put, Phil Boyce in the pole vault, and Lloyd Schlegel in the 880.

The 880-yard relay team of Nebel, Vern Ray, Braun, and Bokor won, as did the mile relay of Kevin Flurkey, Tom Johnstone, Schelgel, and Bokor.

Maine's varsity trackmen defeated Deerfield 78-40 on West's track. Deerfield's cross-country star Wally Weinert has been out the entire season.

Lloyd Schiegel, the cindermen's top half-miler, ran the 440-yard dash and came in first with time of 50.3 seconds, which breaks the school record of Rich Bokor, and is also the field record. Bokor ran anchor on both the 880 and mile-relay teams which both won.

Warrior Phil Boyce, who holds the indoor and outdoor school records for the pole vault, vaulted 12 feet 6 inches for a first and the field record.
