JUNE 8, 1965

Beginning of the End for Seniors

"Wow! I was just reading about what that Class of '65's been up to! That idea of plastering those '65 Alive signs all over everything on May 24th, was pretty clever, don't ya think? I still don't understand how they staged that tornado on the 26th. One of them said it was all a big prank. Then, at 2:30, they finally managed to wake up all the kids in study halls with their alarm clocks.

"I also heard that they rated a police escort on May 27th, after their sit-on at Cumberland Circle. They gave the police a pretty good runaround - The Circle, Maine West, Burger King, Campground Road, and finally a party at Jerri Walshes' house.

"Those kids looked brighter than usual on May 28th. I suppose that's because it was clash day. They managed to have a ditch day, too, except it was on May 31st and authorized. They needed it to study for their final exams on June 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

"Then they stumbled through their only marching practice on the 4th. From there, the girls went home and started their major overhaul, while the boys polished their cars or played golf. Why? Because Memories Are Made of This, the Senior Prom, was held at Henrici's that night. They had a long evening ahead of them with trips to the Loop or to Nippersink on the Dream Train.
"On Sunday, June 6th, weary, sunburned faces peeked from under mortarboard caps at the Commencement Sermon. The next day the seniors were up and at it at 6 am. for a brisk ride to school on their bikes, then a record hop on the tennis courts. Bermudas, tuxedo jackets, toes and sandals were the order of the day for senior boys, while the girls were more conservative in bermuda sets and sunglasses. The seniors spent the rest of their final day in class signing yearbooks. That's all I've heard about the Class of '65 so far."

"That's only the beginning of the end! Today, June 8th, they'll go to their honor's assembly where the top 1 per cent of the class, valedictorian, salutatorian, and departmental award winners, as well as scholarship winners, will be named.

"June 9th will be their day of rest, but on June 10th, they'll attend the Senior Brunch. That's where the winners of the Senior Superlative Contest (Cutest Walk, Biggest Eater, Biggest Status Seeker, etc.) are announced. Then, that night, they will attend their last formal function at Maine West, the Commencement Exercises."

"So that's it for the Class of '65, eh?"

"Oh, I doubt if that's the last you'll hear of them. Call me if you hear anymore news. Bye, Mr. Clouser."

"Good bye, Mr. Cochrane."
