| Bob Burgess '66, and Dennis Doyle '66, have been chosen by the History Department at Maine West to attend the 1965 Boys' State at the Illinois State Fair Grounds at Springfield, for the week of June 20th to June 26th. The boys were chosen by their history teachers from a group of outstanding boys, and the history classes then voted and chose Bob and Dennis to attend. The boys selected for this program have outstanding qualifications in leadership, character, and service. Boys' State is to train boys in the functional aspects of citizenship. It is sponsored by the American Legion, Department of Illinois. Its purpose is to teach the boys constructive attitudes toward the American form of government. They |
will be educated in the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of American citizenship. The program, originated in Illinois in 1934, is now functioning in 50 states. All candidates for admission to Boys' State must be between the ages of 15 and 18 and must have completed at least one semester of 11th grade. The enrollment of Boys' State is limited to 1,280 boys. The main purpose of the political activity of Boys' State is to enable boys to grasp the meaning of governmental responsibilities which they will have to assume when they become adults. |
