Student Council Finishes A Rewarding School Year |
||||||||||
| "What does Student Council do for me?" was a familiar expression heard around Maine West this past year. Your Student Council performed many student services during t h e year. The first was the Summer Dance in July. In the Autumn of 1964, Student Council presented flowers to the new teachers, sponsored the newcomers party, made the Dial Tone available, and put up the Voice of the Students box in the main entrance. Hoang Nhut My, Maine West's foster child, received money from Council, while Homecoming Week was being planned. And what a week it was! In the parade there were more floats than ever! We won our Homecoming game in the newly erected stadium. During the winter there was Care Week and the annual TB. Drive. The highlight of the winter was the V-Show, "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow," which was one of the best attended shows ever produced at Maine. The Election Jitney was sponsored by Student Council at the end of the exciting Election Week. |
As the trees started to sprout in the spring, Student Council sponsored a host of conventions - the all-school Leadership Convention, with two members from each homeroom attending; the hospitality nights with different schools to promote better relations; the Tri-school Convention held at Maine West, with students from Maine West, East and South attending. There was the Niles West Exchange Day where Maine West exchanged students with Niles West for one day, and Student Council also sponsored the junior high school Leadership Convention. Two students were sent to the ISA Convention to represent Maine, and members of Student Council were also guides for the different career nights. Thanks to the work of Student Council, Maine West has a new flag in the auditorium and an Alma Mater. Washing cars before the Junior Prom, sponsoring buses to see the debaters in action on Rebuttal, and selling tickets to the Lion's Club Pancake Day, were three more worthwhile projects. AFS Club and Human Relations Club were added to Inter-Club Council this year. |
