Baseball Team Captures Fifth Conference Title

Although the '65 season was somewhat disappointing to the Warrior diamond fans, the squad's effort was far from unsatisfactory.

The Mainites won their 5th Conference title under coach Al Carstens with two clutch wins over Forest View and Glenbrook North. In the Forest View game the Warriors scored eight runs, while pitcher Jim Smith recorded his third consecutive win over the Falcons with a 6 hit shut-out.

The Glenbrook North game was a different story. Maine edged the Spartans 3-2 to take the Conference crown. Glenbrook North and Forest View both tied one ball game, and in
the Mid-Suburban League a tie is considered half a win, half a loss. This tie enabled the Mainites to take the title without a partner.

Six Warriors were voted to the Mid-Suburban League allConference squad. Representing Maine are shortstop Mike Niese, pitcher-first baseman Stoney Jackson, pitcher Jim Smith, outfielders Bill Verber and Jerry Hanselmann, and catcher Dan Carlson.

At the spring sports banquet the squad voted Jerry Hanselmann as the team's most valuable player and Danny Makos, Warrior second baseman, as captain.
