Netmen Take Mid-Suburban Championship

With fighting determination the Maine West tennis team won their first Mid-Suburban title Saturday, June 22, at Forest View, when they tied with Deerfield.

In the first singles of the Conference meet, Jim Richards lost in his first round. Next Dennis Doyle won three matches to take first place at the second singles. In his first match of the third singles Tom Martin lost.

Bob French and Claude Stewart took second place after losing their third match in the first doubles. In the second doubles Les Beizer and Bob Rheinhart won all three of their matches to take first place.
In the Conference meet MW received 8 points and Deerfield totaled 9. Because MW was already one point ahead of Deerfield before the meet, a tie score resulted.

The tennis team started its climb to the Conference meet by taking second place in the MW quadrangular. The next step was to the MW triangular, where the team placed first. This completed the season with 12 wins and 2 losses. Next in the state districts MW tied for second place. The team entered the Conference meet with 7 wins and 0 losses.

This was the best season any MW tennis team ever had. The best previous season was 8 wins and 4 losses. "The result of this year was due to the boys hard work," admitted Mr. Roger King, head tennis coach.
