Runners Take Conference

Maine's varsity trackmen, led by their great head coach, Mr. Joe Jobst, and his assistants, won the Mid-Suburban title with 62 points, Glenbrook North placed second with 34 points, and Prospect took third.

The Warriors were led by seniors Rich Bokor, Lloyd Schlegel, John Greco, Jerry Nebel, Bernie Braun, Tom Smith, Phil Boyce, and Wayne Wysoglad. These boys will be missed next year.

The finals started out with Wysoglad placing third in the high hurdles. Nebel then took fifth in the 100-yard dash. The 880-yard run, which has been Maine's strongest event this year, saw Schlegel repeat as Conference champ, and Kevin Flurkey taking a second.

The 880-yard relay team of Nebel, Barry Johnson, Vern Ray, and Braun placed first and set a league record. Bokor, who has been a standout on varsity for three years, placed second in the 440-yard dash behind Gorge Morris of Prospect.
Nebel came on strong in the 220-yard dash with a time of 21.4 seconds to take first and set another new league record. Maine's mile relay team of Braun, Flurkey, Schlegel, and Bokor placed first in a close race with Prospect. The two teams were close together when Bokor got the baton for Maine and Morris for Prospect. Bokor took the lead and put on a beautiful kick to finish out his outstanding high school career.

Phil Boyce set a league record with a vault of 12 feet 6 inches, but was awarded a second. Meyer of Niles took first on fewer misses with a vault of 12 feet 6 inches.

Tom Smith and Ken Bixby placed second and fifth, respectively, in the shot put. Smith placed second in the discus with a throw of 163 feet 8 inches, just missing first.

In the State Meet, Warrior Lloyd Schlegel placed fourth in the 880-yard run with a time of 1:55.2; which is a new school record. Schlegel beat Larry Kelly of Maine South, who has been bothered by an inflamed leg tendon. The mile relay team of Braun, Flurkey, Schiegel, and Bokor took a sixth in the State.
