Who is coming 'home'?
Annually high schools throughout the United States, Maine West included, sponsor a week of festivities called Homecoming Week. This week commences with the selection of a theme around which all activities are centered. The following days are filled with the building of the floats and selecting a queen who will be announced at the game. The climax of the week is a dance at which the queen is crowned.

The meaning of homecoming has been lost amidst the fun, excitement, and crepe paper floats. Homecoming was originated to be a week in which the alumni could come 'home' to their
alma mater and cheer the Warriors on to victory. The dance was to be a festive occasion where the classes of '59 thru 64 could get together and discuss their years at Maine.

Through the years homecoming for high schools, unlike that of college, has not been too successful in bringing the former grads back. Although homecoming is a very high spot in the school year, maybe another name would be more appropriate. However, a rose by another name still smells as sweet.
