Debate team to try out for tv's rebuttal
The Debate Team is being coached this year by Miss Jean Poling, new speech teacher. According to Miss Poling, about 35 debaters are on the team, with 20 going out for the first time.

On Oct. 10th the team will try out for the TV program Rebuttal at Northwestern University. Other debates in the near future are North Chicago, Nov. 14th, and Evanston, Nov. 21st. The topic for this year is Resolved: That nuclear weapons should be controlled by an international agency.

In preparing for debates, the team does library research, has practice debates, and discusses the topic with teachers and coaches.

"Anyone can go out for debate," Miss Poling says, and she would like more students to try out. The only requirement is to have at least a B average.
The team is fortunate to have as its coach, Miss Poling, who is experienced in debate. In high school she debated for three years and was District debate winner three consecutive years. Miss Poling was on the varsity debate team at Northwestern College for one year and won the Top Speaker Award at Eau-Claire, Wisconsin. Last summer she was an instructor at the National High School Speech Institute at Northwestern.

The team has an able assistant coach in Mr. Dewane Barnes. Mr. Barnes was debate coach at Rocklord High School for seven years and has taken several successful teams to state.
