| 'Stick with it!'' is a bit of philosophical advice from this week's Warriors in the spotlight, and that is exactly what John Greco and Don Kinder, cross country stars, have done. Don is blue-eyed, brown-haired, 5-feet 9-inches tall, and weighs 135 pounds. He has lettered in cross country. John is 5-feet 11-inches tall and weighs 143. He also has blue eyes and has reddish brown hair. John has two letters in cross country and one in track. "You make friends through sports," said Don. He hopes, "We will go down state this year." Don is looking forward to attending the University of Illinois where he hopes to major in chemistry. He wants to earn a scholastic scholarship. John, who is thinking of going to the University of Wisconsin, has been offered on athletic scholarship and wants to major in English. When John advises to "always wait for your second breath," he speaks from experience. In Conference last year, he ran the mile in 4:25.1. He came in second in the District. Perhaps John's most embarrassing moment came in eighth grade when he scored a basket for the other team. Now basketball is listed as a "hobby." |
While Don looks forward most to college, John is eyeing the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. The way he is running now, he could make it! When asked how they keep up their studies amid all the running, John quipped, "We don't!" Then speaking more seriously, Don said firmly that "you must use your study halls and make the most of your, free time." Upon being asked who their favorite "big time" athlete was they looked at one another and replied in quick unison, "Charlie Curren." We have all, at one time or another, felt a certain dedication toward something. It is a feeling that can't be put into words. This self-obligation is what these boys feel toward cross country. Of course training is no "bed of roses," as they put it. What they dislike most about training is the "whistle drill," and, during the summer, running six to 10 miles every day to keep in condition. John's favorite saying is "If you don't win, make the other guy break the record." Don would like to become third in the state, but John wants to go from eleventh best to first. Pet peeves are wrestlers who go out for cross country and lose. Don and John leave us with one last comment. "More people should come to cross country meets!" |
