Memories of the past revisit mw |

| By Jane Woiski Homecoming '64 is over. All that is left of 10 floats, the product of one week of work, is a pile of ashes. The dance decorations are just a hunk of junk. All the fun and excitement are now memories. Five years ago, memories were being made for Sandy Zick, Homecoming Queen of 1960, as well as her court, Holly Barrows, Sandy Guido, Carole Pendergrass, and Diana Rapheal. That year, the Senior Cass of '61 won the float competition with the "Sweet Smell of Success." Our varsity football team can probably remember the tie score of 21-all, which they got against the Wheaton "Tigers." "The Rhetorical Romp" climaxed the first Homecoming for the class of '65. Nikki Rappaport was Queen, and Marilyn Alfini, Judy Arndt, Sandy Mustradi, and Barb White made up her court. "The Yokes on Them" won the float prize for the class of '62. Homecoming '61 meant victory over the Glenbrook "Spartons" with a score of 27-0. "The Morfit Misfits," a male version of the Porn-Porn squad, complete with "Shades" and trenchcoats, debuted at the 1962 Homecoming Game, in which we beat the "Eagles" from East Leyden, again with a score of 27-0. Jacquie Berndt was Homecoming Queen. Karen Broberg, Barg Georgans, Carol Kristen, and Toril Matre were in her court. Girls' Club-Boys' Club won the float contest with "Beat 'Urn." |
"Autumn Haze" was the theme of the Homecoming Dance '63. Maureen Quinn was Homecoming Queen, and Barb Bauman, Sue Dombrowski, Randi Johnson, and Inger Svenson were her court. The Class of '65 won the float competition with "West Beats All Records." Eisenhower-Decatur's "Panthers" were beaten by the "Warriors" eleven 27-6. Finally, our Freshman Class saw their first Maine Homecoming, and the Class: of '65 saw their last. Peg Callaghan, Diane DeFranco, Jackie Hern, and Beth Holmgren were this year's court, and Sandy Kunkel was crowned Queen. The seniors chalked up their second win in a row in the float competition. Their theme was "Jail the Birds." The language clubs can boast of a second place prize in their first year of competition, and the juniors took third. The Beatles visited the Homecoming Game at hall-time, and the Drum Combo performed, too. The "Falcons" of Forest View suffered their first loss of their season, 35-7. "West Winds" spelled the end of the fifth annual Homecoming at Maine West. |
