Todd enjoys trip abroad |
||||||||||
| By Mandy Rietz "if you want to eat in England, bring your own lunch. The food is very poor," remarked Mr. Harold Todd, a Maine West English teacher. He is qualified to make this remark because he and his wife spent this past summer in Europe. Not only did Mr. and Mrs. Todd attend six weeks of lectures at Oxford University in England, they also found time to travel to Scotland, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, and Ireland. Mr. Todd's favorite country was Italy, because of the scenery, art work, and the "emotional enthusiasm" of the Italians, but his favorite city was Salzburg, Austria. There he enjoyed the mountains, castles, and concerts. |
Being an animal lover Mr. Todd was impressed by the cows of Scotland. They were gray and woolly. Also the storks of Holland proved to be an interesting sight. Each day of his trip offered a different and unusual experience. One incident occurred in England over a sweatshirt. Before she left for her vacation, Mrs. Todd was given a going away gift - an Oxford University sweatshirt. When Mr. Todd reached Oxford, he asked if they sold the sweatshirts. The English salesman was extremely indignant and implied the English were too proper to sell such clothing. After all his traveling and observing, Mr. Todd remarked, "We Americans should copy the European idea of no billboards on the highways." Also he said, "The Europeans feel a better education can be received in Europe, but Americans have a better system." |
