| By Tim McCartney "Well organized discipline, students having a genuine interest toward subject matter, and the teachers expressing friendly atmosphere toward making new teachers feel at home," was assistant varsity coach Dick Fulk's reply when asked what he thought Maine West's most outstanding feature was. Coach Fulk, who is in his first year of coaching, brings a good knowledge of sports to MW. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University where he coached freshman football. He was elected most valuable player on the Eastern football team (1962-63). Football, basketball, and track are the sports he lettered in while attending high school. He was on the varsity football team three years in college. Mr. Fulk is married and has two children. |
"Trying to make a player realize that he must stay in good shape to play football," is the hardest part about training according to the new coach. He learned from coaching that a coach must have a genuine interest in an athlete. Football is his favorite sport because, as Coach Fulk explained, "It develops sportsmanship and teaches the player to have a little selfpride." He went on to say, "I like football because it's a contact sport. I think it makes friendships and close relationships with others that will last a life-time." Coach Fulk's favorite professional athlete is Johnny Morris of the Chicago Bears. "Will to Win" is a favorite saying and will be often heard by the athletes working with the new coach. |
