Government Students Predict Final Results

Which states will vote Republican and which will vote Democratic? How many electoral votes will each Presidential candidate receive? These questions posed a problem for Mr. Harlan Suffield's first, second, and seventh period government classes. Each class had to predict the answers.

The United States was divided into four sections - East, South, Mid-West, and far East. A committee was assigned to each section. The leaders of the committees for first period were Janet Bushlus, Pat Frost, Pat Johnson, and Judy Latala. John Gable, Bob Means, John Obermayer, and Roberta Wells headed the second period class committees. Leading the seventh period class were Earl Flurkey, Linda Gulker, Donna Kolbusz, and Diane Moore.
Research for the predictions included reading magazines and newspapers and watching television reports. This was a project for the government classes and a test for the government L classes.

The results of the Presidential election coincided well with the predictions of the first period class. Out of 50 states and the District of Columbia, the class predicted 46 of the states' decisions correctly.

The second period class also came close by choosing 46 states correctly.

The seventh period class predicted 47 states correctly. The classes have obviously been studying the national election seriously to be able to predict the outcome closely
