Wheels...Away

To many MW students a car is either a near and dear dream or an actuality.

With the acquisition of a car, a student must realize that he assumes added responsibilities.

From Car Craft Magazine, Los Angeles, California, Editor Don Evans regularly sends The Westerner hints and ideas about car care which we will pass on to you.

THESE DAYS THE cost of a car covers more than tin, transmission, and tires. There is in every automobile purchase, the cost of the new car, deductions based on the trade-in of an old car, insurance costs, and financing charges.

Most people know that car prices vary, so they shop for bargains, but they usually don't realize that the same is true of insurance and financing costs.
It is not uncommon for car buyers to save $200 or $300 by shopping for financing and insurance before they sign on the dealer's dotted line.

When going out to shop, leave the checkbook home and take along a paper and pencil to write down the figures quoted. Visit several dealers to check the going price on that particular make and model. Shop and save before you sign.

WITH WINTER COMING car owners should take a good look at their cars. Things that need to be checked, for example, are the spark plugs. It might be a good idea to have them cleaned and re-gapped. If you know how, check the breaker points in the distributor. Check the water content of the cells in the battery and fill them if needed. Battery cables should be removed and cleaned with coarse sandpaper, then clamps and tops of the posts coated with vasoline to ward off corrosion.
