| Maine West was represented by 21 out of 42 students picked from local schools to participate Nov. 9th through 15th, in Youth Appreciation Week. These students, who were selected by their U.S. history teachers, held certain city official positions. The Optimist Club of Des Plaines sponsors Youth Appreciation Week. This week gives students a chance to become active in the local government. The students picked from Maine West to act as city officials were Arland Johannes, police magistrate; Dennis Doyle, comptroller; Mike Minerva, city engineer; Mary Ann Sloan, city attorney; Penny Kanney, health officer; Robin Swain, youth commissioner; Daniel Roycraft, health commissioner; Matthew Erschen, traffic commissioner; Gretchen Rivard, plan commissioner; Greg Clark, architectural commissioner; Cheri Mercer, library commissioner; Shirley Robaus, director of civil defense; Lucretia James, building inspector; and Joy Heckenbach, a court reporter. |
Also chosen were seven aldermen. They were Sherman Schuett and Julia Szabo of the first ward, Margaret Ringl of the second ward, Wendy Geertz of the third ward, Marianne Bretsny-der of the fourth ward, Camille Barice of the sixth ward, and Christine Haarvig of the seventh ward. Part of last week's schedule for these students included a visit with Mayor Daley in Chicago and a trip to Cook County Jail Nov. 10th. Last week's activities have become unforgettable for 21 juniors. The Optimist's opinion on Youth Appreciation Week is a good outlook on how to participate. They feel that, "All of us, whether or not we are Optimists, can participate in Youth Appreciation Week. We can take an active and effective part in this worthwhile observance in any number of ways. We could make it a point to compliment some youngster, if it's only by telling him he 'looks sharp.' Or we could go out of our way to discover some 'good deed' performed by a youngster and then talk about it with our friends. You'll be surprised at how many 'good deeds' you will discover that have been going on right in front of your eyes without your having noticed them before." |
