Coach Likes MW's Tradition

by Tim McCartney

"Many times the boy that does not have the ability as a freshman will, with hard work, become much better at a sport than the boy who has the ability and does not put out," says freshman "B" team football coach Chuck Lawyer. This is his first year for coaching football and his fourth year for teaching science and coaching track.

Coach Lawyer lettered three times in football and twice in baseball while attending Industry High School. He became a member of the Maine West faculty after graduating from Western Illinois University. Coach Lawyer's hobbies include golf, bowling, and reading. His pet peeves are "students and athletes that don't work up to their ability; in other words, 'loafers'.''
The coach's favorite sport is football because it matches one player against another and because the player hitting the hardest wins. According to Coach Lawyer, the size of the body is not as important as the size of the heart. "To get a team up mentally for a game is the hardest part about coaching," Mr. Lawyer believes. He is looking forward to an undefeated track season for Maine West.

Chuck Lawyer had this to say when asked what he thought was the most outstanding feature of Maine West: "The winning tradition in sports, scholastics, and music"
