'Maybes' in Previews of 4 Sports

On Nov. 9th 25 boys attended the first wrestling meeting of the season. Four returning lettermen (Jim Cichowski, John I Fowler, John Krumpos, and Al Kruse) were among those present. The team lost nine lettermen who graduated last June.

Coach Carlini seemed pessimistic about the team's chances by saying that most of the boys are in the same weight classes and that there will be a lot of "ifs." There are some juniors who are good at pinning, but the coach said there aren't enough of them.

Wrestling is a very demanding sport, and the only requirement for the team is hard work. Boys who can work should come out to help the team along.

Gymnastics

Nov. 9th was the first practice for varsity gymnasts. Coach Drain's squad has eight returning lettermen. They are John Abbott, Jim Alfini, Dale Alles, Ken Bluhm, Bill Bach, Dick Braun, Marty Dettmer, and John Kennett. Mike Keller, a senior who transferred to Maine West, is expected to fill the vacancies on the trampoline and in tumbling.

The squad will carry 20 men. Last year the gymnasts finished with a 9-6 record and ended in second place in the Conference. Coach Drain is planning to do better this year with the present squad. Maine's perennial foe, Prospect, is expected to be its toughest opponent. The gymnasts will meet West Leyden first on Dec. 8th at 4:30 p.m.

Basketball

Varsity basketball coach Gaston Freeman has three returning lettermen this season. They are Jackson, Smith, and Verber. These players rank high for past performances on the court, according to the coach.

"We will have a respectable ball club which should place considerably high in the Conference," said Coach Freeman. He also believes that Conference basketball will be fairly well balanced this year.

Some of the best prospects this year are Charlie Curren, Tom Hendrickson, Larry Hoffman, Don Kinder, Paul Moehling, Ken Mueller, Chuck Peterson, Al Ratieke, and Ted Wolters. Last year the team had a record of 20 wins and 5 losses, placing them first in the Conference. The varsity will probably carry 25 boys this season.

Swimming

"This is definitely going to be a rebuilding year," said varsity Coach Baer. With the loss of many of last year's lettermen, the team will have to work to regain its position in the conference. The tankers took a second last year.

There are six possibles for the 200-yard Medley Relay. They are returning lettermen Rick Fulle '65, Bruce Jacobsen '65, and Bob Syphers '65, plus Norm Hudson '67, Tom Wenzel '66, and Ed Thai '65.

Freestylers are Jim Wandry '66, Craig Erven '65 and Reed Erven '66, Dave Ladendorf '65, Tom Juriius '65, and Craig Vosburgh '65.

Tom Gast will be swimming 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley, with Rick Fulle '65, swimming the 100. yard breaststroke. There are three other possibles in this event, including Gary Robbins '66, Jordy Minerva '65, and Doug Newman '66. The breast stroke was one of Maine West's strongest events last year, with Jimo Kuhrt '64, breaking several records.

Backstroke will be Bruce Jacobsen, Norm Hudson and Ed Thal.

"Student support at the meets is the thing we need most," said one swimmer.

The tankers open the season against Oak Park today at 4:15 p.m.
