Sports Slants

By Ken Lashway

Even though the winter sports season is just about upon us, it is always interesting to look back upon a few statistics of the football season.
As a final note, it might be added that the Westmen returned only five punts all season. What the returns lacked in number, they made up for in distance as the gridmen burned up 125 yards on only, five returns.

ALL-CONFERENCE SELECTIONS put Ken Bixby, tackle; Jim Cichowski, backfield; Charlie Curren, backfield; and Stoney Jackson, end; on the first team. Honorable mention went to Dan Carlson, guard; and Jim Leis, center.

NOMINATED FOR All-state from the Mid-Suburban are Charlie Curren, MW; Ted Bohn, GB South; Wayne Kuklinski, Prospect; and Art Scheskie, Deerfield.

NOTES FROM ALUMNI: Joe Wehlacz, star MW basketball performer last year, is a center candidate on Memphis State University's freshman basketball team.

COACH KEARNS, M-Club sponsor, is looking forward to the annual M Club-faculty basketball game. He is confident faculty will be victorious. The faculty will meet the M Club on Dec. 2nd, in the Maine East fieldhouse.

The M-Club is hoping for another victory like last year's 42 - 39 upset.

The honors for the longest runs of the season belong to senior tailback Curren. His 82-yard punt return against GB South was followed in later games by an 87-yard kick-oIf return and a 73-yard run from scrimmage.

Stoney Jackson hauled down a stray Niles North pass and returned it for a 75-yard TD. In the same game, punt specialist Carison boomed a 59-yard boot (on the fly) to tie the record which he matched two other times during the course of the season. Dan ended with a final average of 33 yards per kick.
