Greco Ends Cross Country Season with Second in State |
||||||||||
| "John Greco is the best cross country runner Maine West has ever had," said varsity Coach Barringer. Nov. 7th was a nervous day for John when he ended his great high school cross country career by placing second in the Illinois State Meet held at the Urbana Country Club. It was an exciting race with about 200 runners from all over the state. At the end of the quarter mile John was running 150th. He moved up to the middle of the group at the half mile and was 20th at the mile. Greg Wright of Downers Grove was in the lead at the mile and a half mark with John fifth. With 300 yards to go it was Grant and Bowman of Proviso West leading in first and second, respectively. John was third. Finally with 150 yards left, John captured the lead. |
Bowman and John were neck and neck with 100 yards left. Then with about 85 yards more Bowman pulled away and beat John by 15 to 20 yards covering the 1.99 mile course in 9:36.8. John's time was about 9:40. John and Bowman were both first in their district with identical times of 9:10 over the standard qualifying course of 1.95 miles. A Maine West runner has never placed second in a State meet before. The first five in the meet were Bruce Bowman, Proviso West; John Greco, Maine West; Craig Grant, Proviso West; Bill Stevens, St. Ignatius; and Wally Weinert, Deerfield, respectively. The top ten runners received awards. Proviso West was the winning team with York second. |
