| "Anyone can come who wants to," says Miss Jean Poling, debate team sponsor. Tomorrow, Dec. 5th, will be the Maine West Invitational Debate Conference. Debates will be held in the auditorium and classrooms from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thirty-one high schools with eight representatives will attend. Approximately 248 debators will be here with 60 coaches. Maine West is a member of the Suburban Interstate Debate League. This is Miss Poling's first year sponsoring a Debate Conference. Members of the Maine West debate team are Rob Reinhart, Dawn Piotter Don Maruska, Kitty Kinser, Joy Heckenbach, Doug Bergman, Phil Engle, John Grimes, Chris Sparrow, Dick Cornelius, Steve Lilja, and Randy Dean. |
Since Maine West is sponsoring the debate, there is an unwritten law that Maine cannot win. However, two trophies will be given to the winning varsity and junior varsity teams. The debated topic will be "Nuclear Weapons Should Be Controlled By An International Agency." The next Debate Conference will be held at York and Marion Central High Schools on Dec. 12th. |
