Tankers Drop Proviso West |
||||||||||
| The Varsity tankers have had an excellent season so far this year, soundly defeating two old rivals, Proviso West and Waukegan. The Bulldogs of Waukegan were the Warrior's latest victim, falling 69-26 Saturday in an away meet. The tankers took firsts in nine out of 11 events. Waukegan captured firsts only in the 50yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. The medley relay team of Norm Hudson, Rick Fulle, Craig Erven and Tom Junius opened the meet with a first, putting the Warriors ahead, 7-0. From this point on, Maine West never lost the lead. Reed Erven placed first in both the 100 and 200-yard freestyle events. Tom Wenzel and Bruce Jacobsen teamed up to sweep the 200-yard individual medley. Divers Rich Hoffmeyer and Greg Gundling swept the diving. Tom Gast and Tom Wenzel swam off with the honors in the 100-yard butterfly, while Craig Erven and Jim Wandrey did the same in the 400-yard freestyle, the longest distance event. Rick Fulle placed first in the 100-yard breastroke, as Jordy Minerva came in a close third. |
The 200-yard freestyle relay of Craig Vosburgh, Tom Gast, Tom Junius, and Dave Ladendorf finished the meet successfully, bringing the final score to Maine West 69, Waukegan 26. Against the Proviso Panthers, a team undefeated by Maine West since 1959-60, the swimmers came home with a wide margin of victory, winning 57-38 This was the opening meet of the season, held at Proviso West on Wednesday, Nov. 25. In the butterfly, Ron Van Cleave, Proviso's star butterflier, was disqualified for an illegal finish. This, along with some strong diving, saw the Warriors pull from behind and win the meet. The swimmers, Maine West's only undefeated winter sports team, take on Elgin tonight away. Next Friday at 4:30 p.m., the tankers open their home season against GB South. |
