Jeanne higgins places first in annual cherry pie contest

Can she bake a cherry pie? Jeanne Higgins '65, definitely proved she could last Wednesday, Dec. 2nd, when she won the first step of the Penny Flame Northern Illinois Gas Company Cherry Pie Contest.

Jeanne and the three other contestants, Bonnie Junius '67, Mary Jo Karner '65, and Dreama Wells '65, were required to bake a nine-inch pie from scratch, using their own recipes. The pies were baked during class time and judged after school.

The pies were judged on appearance, taste, and texture of the crust. Also, the judges graded the girls on their general procedure.
Miss Norma Benner, home economics teacher, was in charge of the baking and was the general sponsor. Mr. Herman Rider, Maine West's principal; Mrs. Gloria Saul, cafeteria manager; and Mrs. Joan Tempero, home economics teacher, were the judges.

Jeanne will now participate in the regional competition at Glenview. There the contestants will not only have to bake, but also take a written quiz. The next step is the finals, where the winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Other awards will also be granted.

Mrs. Lucille Stiles, chairman of the Home Economics department, stated, "We're always interested in participating in this contest because it helps the students develop poise as well as skill."
